Before the warming produced by the Kelvin waves and the weak presence of the South Pacific anticyclone, which has varied the distribution of the anchovy resource, the Ministry of Production (Produce), through Imarpe, begins a scientific exploration today.

This exploration will seek to determine what the climatic and hydrobiological conditions of our sea are, specifically on the coast, south-central, and thus decide in a timely manner the fishery management measures in the anchovy resource.

The crew, made up of 15 scientists depart today from Chimbote in three vessels: Imarpe IV, Imarpe V and the scientific research vessel “Luis Flores Portugal”, in which they will sail for five days from Chicama to Huarmey, from Punta Bermejo to Pisco and from Bahía Independencia to Ilo, finally returning through the port of Callao.

In this way, we seek to collect scientific evidence in situ, on the state of temperature, salinity, oxygen and micronutrients in the sea.

Likewise, to know the distribution and concentration of the anchovy resource, collecting size information, among other biological aspects, was informed by Dr. Rodolfo Cornejo, scientist in charge of the expedition.

“With studies such as acoustic prospecting we will determine distribution, anchovy concentration, as well as size distribution, recruitment and spawning process. This mission will obtain useful scientific information about the anchovy fishery resource, ”he said.

Heating
The exploration seeks to confirm studies that show warming caused by Kelvin waves and the weak presence of the South Pacific anticyclone.

This phenomenon would be dispersing the adult anchovy to deeper areas, in search of cold waters. While the juveniles would have swum to the coasts, in the direction of the fishing fleets.

It should be noted that the anchovy lives in cold waters that vary between 14 and 19 ° C, where an intermediate salinity is concentrated, characteristic of the Humboldt current.

The departure of the three scientific vessels is carried out within the framework of constant monitoring and monitoring of the Produce, to obtain the main biological, population and fishery indicators of the anchovy resource.

Only in this way can fisheries management measures be informed and recommended in a timely manner.

Veda
As recalled, the Ministry of Production (Produce) announced from January 1, 2020, an indefinite period of new suspension of extractive activities of the anchovy and white anchovy resource, in the area between 08 ° 00'S and 15 ° 00'S, within the first 30 miles of the coast.

Through Ministerial Resolution No. 552-2019-PRODUCE, published in the newspaper El Peruano, the ministry indicated that the suspension zone is located from the coast of Trujillo (La Libertad) to that of Nazca (Ica).

This measure will be in force until there is scientific evidence of a decrease in the incidence of juveniles in this area, on which the Institute of the Sea of Peru (Imarpe) will inform in a timely manner, after the expedition of the ship that leaves today.
