The closure of the second 2024 anchovy and white anchovy fishing season in the North-Central Zone of Peru was ordered as of midnight on Thursday, January 23. This measure was announced by the Ministry of Production (Produce) within the framework of sustainable management of marine resources, through Ministerial Resolution 017-2025-PRODUCE.

According to the Peruvian Sea Institute (IMARPE), the closure seeks to protect the spawning stock of anchovy, after a significant increase in reproductive activity was evident.

“The sustainability of our fishing resources is essential to ensure the continuity of fishing activity and food security. The protection of the resource during spawning is a commitment that we assume responsibly for the future of our fisheries,” said the Vice Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture, Jesús Barrientos.

So far, more than 95% of the quota assigned in the second anchovy fishing season that began on November 1, 2024 has been captured. With this, the 2.38 million tons have been exceeded.

The entity considers that this number will continue to increase as the unloading of the vessels ends.

Among the main unloading ports, Chimbote, Malabrigo, Coishco, Callao, Supe, Tambo de Mora and Chancay stand out, reflecting an efficient and dynamic fishing activity.

“This season has not only consolidated the recovery of the fishing sector, but has also boosted the generation of employment and the consumption of marine products. We have generated more than 49 thousand direct and indirect jobs, contributing significantly to the economic reactivation of the country,” said Barrientos.
