The regulations prohibit the extraction of specimens smaller than the permitted size, establishing a maximum tolerance of 10% per operation.
The Ministry of Production (Produce) authorized the start of the First Fishing Season 2026 for the anchovy (Engraulis ringens) and white anchovy (Anchoa nasus) resources in the North-Central zone of the Peruvian coast.
Through Ministerial Resolution No. 000085-2026-PRODUCE , published today in the newspaper El Peruano, a Maximum Total Allowable Catch Limit (MTACL) of 1,914,049 tons is established, adopting the recommendations of the Peruvian Sea Institute ( Imarpe ) to guarantee the sustainability of the anchovy resource .
The authorized quota ensures an adequate balance between responsible exploitation and stock conservation, considering the population structure of the anchovy resource, its behavior in the face of current marine environment conditions and permanent monitoring of fishing operations .
The scientific information that supports the start of this season comes from various specialized assessments, among which the Hydroacoustic Assessment Cruise of Anchovy and other Pelagic Resources 2602-04 stands out, carried out between February 16 and March 23, 2026.
To safeguard the sustainability of the fishery, the Ministry of Production (Produce) will maintain continuous monitoring of catches. Regulations prohibit the extraction of specimens smaller than the permitted size, establishing a maximum tolerance of 10% per fishing trip.
Furthermore, only vessels with valid permits using purse seine nets with a minimum mesh size of 1/2 inch and operating outside of areas reserved for artisanal fishing may engage in fishing activities. The Ministry of Production is authorized to immediately suspend or close fishing areas in the event of a high incidence of juvenile fish.
With these actions, the Government reaffirmed its commitment to the rational and sustainable use of hydrobiological resources, balancing economic activity with fisheries sustainability and ensuring that this strategic fishery continues to be an engine of well-being for thousands of families.
