This initiative is known as Cruise 2609-10 for the Hydroacoustic Assessment of Anchoveta and Other Pelagic Resources, a study that will run until October 7 of this year.
The assessment will cover the area from Puerto Pizarro in Tumbes to Morro Sama in Tacna, involving 17 fishing vessels, as specified in Directorial Resolution 457-2026-PRODUCE/DGPCHDI, published yesterday, Monday.
Anchoveta fishing is facing a crisis this year, primarily due to conditions associated with the El Niño phenomenon. The first fishing season in the country's north-central zone closed on August 20, following several suspensions and concerns regarding the overfishing of juveniles.
This new assessment follows a previous "Operation Eureka" conducted from August 15 to 18, which revealed that 65% of the biomass consisted of juveniles, spawning levels were below historical averages, and conditions were unfavorable for the species' normal reproduction.
